Smart Power Myanmar Overview

 Smart Power Myanmar (SPM) is an integrated country platform that will accelerate rural electrification to spur economic growth and transform rural communities. With an initial investment from The Rockefeller Foundation, SPM aims to catalyze investment of hundreds of millions of dollars to support the rollout of thousands of mini-grids and other rural electrification solutions. SPM is received additional support from its Founding Members: The World Bank, USAID, Shell and Yoma Strategic Holdings. Smart Power Myanmar’s vision is a natural extension of achievements made by Pact over several years under the Ahlin Yaung program which has brought energy to rural communities in Myanmar on a household-byhousehold basis. Fortified by additional evidence and insights into current and potential energy use (see our recent study Bridging the Energy Gap),  Smart Power Myanmar will identify and promote business models to stabilize and strengthen the rural market for renewable energy, addressing both demand- and supply-side challenges. SPM is seeking highly experienced energy professionals with significant experience from both the private and public sector who are committed to improving access to energy and economic growth.

Position Purpose 

The Energy Services Senior Director position will serve as a senior leader within the SPM team and drive the development of new business models and strategies to accelerate investment in Myanmar's rural energy sector. S/he will lead the co-creation and implementation of SPM’s programmatic strategy and take responsibility for the achievement of key operational milestones. The Energy Services Senior Director will be responsible for the management of a small team of professionals, ensuring that they deliver on their objectives and receive opportunities for professional development.  

Key Responsibilities 

The Energy Services Senior Director will demonstrate exceptional performance in the following functional areas: 

  • Lead engagement with financial institutions and other partners to design and deploy financing mechanisms that support deployment of decentralized energy access solutions in rural Myanmar
  • Facilitate partnerships between investors and private developers with investment-ready energy access projects  
  • Identify, analyze, advise and develop business and financial models for commercially-viable decentralized projects in the Myanmar context
  • Identify suitable sites for mini-grid development, assess the technological and economic viability of those sites, and solicit and evaluate bids from prospective developers.
  • Facilitate negotiations between communities, the government of Myanmar, and prospective developers, representing the interests of communities who seek to gain access to energy.
  • Provide management and mentorship to the team.  

Basic Requirements 

  • MBA or similarly appropriate academic background in finance, business, economics, or other relevant field  
  • At least 10 years of experience in investment/business advisory, banking and/or asset management sectors, incl. solid experience in facilitating and closing investment deals within the energy sector
  • Prior experience in developing financial mechanisms/tools to accelerate investments in an underdeveloped sector
  • Extensive knowledge of business investments environment and ability to trigger match-making between private sector and investors in infrastructure development projects
  • Commitment to live and work in Myanmar, incl. willingness to travel extensively in challenging conditions
