Trama TecnoAmbiental (TTA) is an international consulting and engineering SME active since 1986 and based in Barcelona, Spain. Its main specialty is distributed renewable energy generation combined with energy management and efficiency in developing regions. In rural electrification, and particularly microgrids, TTA has been involved in studies, policy, deployment and capacity building in over 60 countries.

TTA’s team has international and cross-cultural experience at technological as well as institutional levels, including regulatory, financial and social aspects. Projects have been done in Europe, Americas, Africa, the Middle East, Oceania and Asia. Clients include governments, multilateral and bilateral institutions (WB UNDP, UNOPS, UNIDO, UNESCO, IDB, OLADE, IRENA, IEA, EC, AECID, and others), NGOs, local communities, individuals, private developers, contractors, electric utilities etc.

TTA was awarded the EUREC Technology Prize 2001, “for developing excellent system technology for rural electrification based on renewable energy sources, combined with an innovative, user-oriented approach for its implementation”.

In 2015, TTA was awarded with the Prize “Off-Grid Experts Awards” by the company Off-Grid Phaesun together with ARE, for excellence in the performance in the field of Off-Grid power supply, in the Category A “Product” for its “Electricity Dispenser”, a Smart Meter for microgrids.

Job description

TTA is seeking a keen, diligent experienced engineer to lead and coordinate the technical department. The Technical Director will be in charge of technical designs (both mechanical and electrical) at the various stages (from concept design to detailed engineering designs and drawings), bill of quantities, compliance with standards and codes, project implementation logistics and budgets, and overall organization and quality assurance of the technical department.

The focus will be especially on micro-grids with renewable energy generation for rural electrification and hybrid renewable-energy/diesel projects due to the increase in the demand for micro-grids in Africa and Latin America-Caribbean in particular. Some projects will be related to grid-connected RE projects.

The Technical Director will lead a small technical team (3 to 6 engineers) and report to the Director and the Regional Managers.



The Technical Director will specifically be responsible for:

  • Timely quality production, review and control of technical designs, technical specifications and budgets
  • Cost optimization of detailed engineering solutions designs and bills of materials
  • Supervision and management of technical department and field engineers, including remote management and supervision of local engineers in the Kenyan office and identification of gaps within the technical department  
  • Travel to project sites for project supervision and commissioning(up to 30% of time)
  • Keep up with last technology developments, in particular with system control and storage
  • Identifying new market technical challenges and potential technology advancements to integrate in new projects and solutions across the different departments
  • Supervision of the Technical monitoring of key performance indicators of plants in operation.
  • Ability to remotely, or through field engineers, closely work and supervise local sub-contractors in Africa, Latin America and Asia
  • Help the Business Development department in identifying and assisting with the preparation of proposals, in particular preparing technical methodologies, bills of materials and budgets and technical drawings for proposals  


The ideal candidate for this position will have the following competences:

  • Educational Background. A bachelor’s degree in engineering, preferably in mechanical, electrical or mechatronics or related
  • Previous Experience. Minimum 5 years of experience in solar PV.
  • Interests:  
    • Passionate about renewable energies and rural electrification
    • Motivation to travel internationally often, in particular to developing countries

    • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
    • Methodical and well organized

    • Ability and proven experience to think creatively, learn quickly and develop innovative solutions involving electrical and mechanical challenges
    • Cross-cultural communication and interpersonal skills

The following competences will be an advantage:

  • Previous experience in RE micro-grid projects, distributed solar PV and electrical batteries will be valued 
  • Previous experience managing technical departments is desirable
  • Experience with design of MV/LV distribution grids is desirable
  • LanguagesFluency in English, both written and verbal

Salary: Approximate annual gross salary for the position based in Barcelona, Spain: 38-45,000 EUR, subject to candidate’s qualifications and negotiation.

Starting date: Immediate
