ARE on the potential of airborne wind in rural areas at AWEC
ARE CEO, David Lecoque attended the Airbone Wind Conference on 24-26 April 2024 in Madrid, organised by Airborne Wind Europe, the association of the European airborne wind energy sector.
Airborne wind energy systems (AWES) generate electricity by using automated flying devices or kites which are attached by a tether or cable to a ground station. They tap into strong winds at altitudes of 400-800 metres and allow the use of wind power in locations where turbines cannot be installed.
The conference gathered leading scientists, researchers, and entrepreneurs from the airborne wind energy sector to present their latest findings and discuss advancements in the field. The conference laid the groundwork for the integration of airborne energy into the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), marking a significant milestone in renewable energy, as it acknowledges the technology’s potential.
David Lecoque participated in the session ‘Airborne Wind Energy as a Viable Solution to Further Rural Electrification’ where he highlighted the potential of wind energy in rural areas and off-grid applications.
