ARE emphasises “access to energy” goal in Latin America at the European Commission
Yesterday, at a European Commission event focused on investment incentives for energy projects in Argentina, the Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE) underscored the critical need for energy access in parallel with energy transition goals in Argentina and Latin America & Caribbean.
The event, hosted by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER), brought together EU institutions, Argentinian energy stakeholders, and European energy companies to discuss the opportunities and challenges for investing in Argentina’s energy sector under its new legal framework. With a focus on enhancing Argentina’s energy security and accelerating its transition to renewable energy, the discussions highlighted the significant role of European technologies in achieving these goals.
During one of the panel discussions, ARE drew attention to the fact that approximately 1.5 million people in Argentina remain without electricity access, stressing that energy access must remain a priority alongside the country’s broader energy transition. ARE called for targeted action from both private and public sector players and reiterated its commitment to working with prospective partners. The organisation proposed itself as a bridge between European stakeholders aiming to expand their presence in Argentina and the wider Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region.
The event featured a diverse delegation, including representatives from Argentina’s Ministry of Economy, regional stakeholders, and private-sector energy companies such as Acciona, Enel, and ABO Energy. Together, these discussions marked a promising step toward bolstering EU-Argentina cooperation for a sustainable and inclusive energy future.
