ARE to drive the conversation on sustainable energy with a powerful delegation at COP29

The 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference, known as COP29, is currently underway in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11 to 22 November. This pivotal event, which brings together global leaders, stakeholders, and advocates, addresses pressing climate issues and aims to solidify commitments to counteract climate change.

The Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE) has sent a robust delegation of nine representatives to champion decentralised renewable energy (DRE) and reinforce the mission for universal energy access. This delegation, including Benjamin Hugues of Camco, Ivana Pokorná of ComAp, Ayu Abdullah of COMET, Carlo Tacconelli of EnGreen, Tam Kemabonta of Entric Power Systems, Leonard Makonese of Lanforce Energy, Gastone Maschietti of Off-Grid Europe, Walid Sheta of Schneider Electric, and Parfait Onema Lutundula of Tech Power, embodies the depth and breadth of expertise across the DRE sector.

ARE’s activities at COP29 will be highlighted on 16 November at a key side-event hosted by the Commonwealth Secretariat. Titled Fostering Collaborative Actions to Fast Track Clean Energy Transition in the Commonwealth,” this event will take place in the Blue Zone (G32b) at 14:00. The session is set to explore collaborative initiatives under the Commonwealth Secretariat’s Clean Energy Transition (CSET) agenda. It aims to promote opportunities for Commonwealth countries to accelerate their clean energy transitions, spotlighting the importance of inclusivity and equity in global energy discussions.

A highlight of ARE’s participation will be the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Commonwealth Secretariat, with Board Member Ayu Abdullah representing ARE at the formal ceremony. This MoU marks a significant step forward in the collaboration between ARE and the Commonwealth to enhance the implementation of DRE solutions across member countries, facilitating technical exchanges and fostering sustainable progress towards net-zero targets.

As COP29 progresses, the ARE delegation is anticipated to be a central voice in discussions surrounding the energy transition, advocating for impactful and scalable solutions to reach universal energy access. Their presence underscores ARE’s commitment to a resilient and equitable energy future that is essential to mitigating climate change and supporting sustainable economic development.
