The Challenge
Lake Ndutu Tented Lodge faced challenges related to its access to safe and potable water. The existing water sources were unreliable and often contaminated, putting both guest safety and the lodge’s daily operations at risk. In addition, the environmental impact of the lodge’s water usage and reliance on non-renewable energy sources was becoming a growing concern. The need for a reliable, clean, and sustainable water solution was evident.
Renewable Solution
To solve this problem, GadgeTroniX introduced a solar-powered Reverse Osmosis (RO) system, eliminating the need for grid electricity and ensuring a reliable, sustainable water supply. The system includes:
- 8.64 kWp solar array – 16 high-efficiency JA Solar MBB Half-cell Monocrystalline PV Modules (540 W each)
- Charge controllers – 2 x Victron SmartSolar Charge Controller MPPT 150/85-TR
- Inverter charger – 3 x Victron Multiplus-II Inverter Charger 3.0kVA 48V
- Lithium battery – 1 x Freedom Won LiTE Commercial 10/8 – 10kWh HV LiFePO4 Battery
- Remote monitoring – Victron Cerbo GX and GX Touch Display for real-time system performance tracking
- Pre-chlorination for initial disinfection
- Green sand filtration to remove iron and manganese
- Carbon media filtration for organic and chlorine removal
- Sediment filter cartridges to remove particulates
- Online antioxidant and antiscalant dosing to prevent scale build-up and enhance water quality
- Reverse Osmosis (RO) purification to remove contaminants down to a molecular level
With solar energy as the primary power source, the system now operates consistently, providing 1,000 liters of purified water per hour for the lodge while reducing reliance on non-renewable energy.
