GadgetroniX – Reverse osmosis system at the Lake Ndutu Tented Lodge (Tanzania)

Who, What & Where

  • GadgetroniX
  • Supply and installation of off-grid solar, power backup, battery storage, remote monitoring, internet services, IP phones
  • Lake Ndutu Tented Lodge, Tanzania

The Company

GadgetroniX is a leading distributor of globally renowned solar, water, security & surveillance, and communication equipment in Tanzania. Working with a team of highly competent staff including over seventy expert technicians employed full-time, a group of electrical/mechanical engineers, and quantity surveyors, has enabled GadgetroniX to specialise in an array of areas including communication, energy systems, water systems, electric vehicles, mobile signal boosters, networking, and security & surveillance systems.

GadgetroniX represents several well-recognised international companies in the pursuit of developing, testing, and promoting clean energy technologies and other services to empower individuals and businesses.

The Challenge

Lake Ndutu Tented Lodge faced challenges related to its access to safe and potable water. The existing water sources were unreliable and often contaminated, putting both guest safety and the lodge’s daily operations at risk. In addition, the environmental impact of the lodge’s water usage and reliance on non-renewable energy sources was becoming a growing concern. The need for a reliable, clean, and sustainable water solution was evident.

Renewable Solution

To solve this problem, GadgeTroniX introduced a solar-powered Reverse Osmosis (RO) system, eliminating the need for grid electricity and ensuring a reliable, sustainable water supply. The system includes:

  • 8.64 kWp solar array – 16 high-efficiency JA Solar MBB Half-cell Monocrystalline PV Modules (540 W each)
  • Charge controllers – 2 x Victron SmartSolar Charge Controller MPPT 150/85-TR
  • Inverter charger – 3 x Victron Multiplus-II Inverter Charger 3.0kVA 48V
  • Lithium battery – 1 x Freedom Won LiTE Commercial 10/8 – 10kWh HV LiFePO4 Battery
  • Remote monitoring – Victron Cerbo GX and GX Touch Display for real-time system performance tracking
  • Pre-chlorination for initial disinfection
  • Green sand filtration to remove iron and manganese
  • Carbon media filtration for organic and chlorine removal
  • Sediment filter cartridges to remove particulates
  • Online antioxidant and antiscalant dosing to prevent scale build-up and enhance water quality
  • Reverse Osmosis (RO) purification to remove contaminants down to a molecular level

With solar energy as the primary power source, the system now operates consistently, providing 1,000 liters of purified water per hour for the lodge while reducing reliance on non-renewable energy.

Project Outcome

The installation of the RO System was a game-changer for Lake Ndutu Tented Lodge. The primary outcomes of the project included:

  • Sustainable water supply: The system reliably produces 1,000 litres of purified water per hour, ensuring that the lodge has a consistent supply of clean drinking water.
  • Energy efficiency: Powered by solar energy, the system minimises the environmental impact of water extraction and purification, contributing to the lodge’s sustainability goals.
  • Cost savings: By utilising renewable energy and eliminating the need for bottled water, the lodge reduced its operational costs and reliance on non-renewable energy sources.
  • Remote monitoring: The ability to remotely monitor and manage the system ensures optimal performance, minimising downtime and maintenance costs.
  • Improved guest experience: Clean, safe water enhances the guest experience and meets the lodge’s high standards of quality.
  • Reduced carbon emissions: By shifting to a solar-powered system, the lodge has significantly reduced its carbon footprint, contributing to a greener and more sustainable operation.

Overall, this project not only provided Lake Ndutu Tented Lodge with a reliable water solution but also aligned with its commitment to sustainability, making it an ideal model for eco-conscious hospitality operations.
