cdw Stiftung successfully launches a solar off-grid system in southern Belize
ARE Member cdw Stiftung has successfully launched a solar off-grid system in Corazon Creek, located in southern Belize. For the first time, nearly 400 residents of this Central American village now have reliable access to electricity.
The government of Belize has set a goal to achieve universal access to electricity by 2030. Currently, there are still about 20 remote villages that cannot be connected to the national power grid. PV mini-grids offer a sustainable and reliable solution to supply these off-grid communities with electricity.
The Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy, Logistics and E-Governance and the cdw Stiftung have now electrified two villages via a solar off-grid system. Since 2017, a pilot system has been reliably providing electricity to the residents of La Gracia in the Cayo District. Access to electricity has driven steady development in the village. To meet the growing energy demand, the cdw Stiftung expanded the system in La Gracia earlier this year: the battery storage capacity was increased, and additional modules were installed to enhance the PV output.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Energy, the national electricity provider Belize Electricity Ltd. and Solar Energy Solutions Belize Ltd., the cdw Stiftung is planning the implementation of a third solar off-grid system in Belize in 2025.
