Position paper: Advancing gender equality in the renewable energy sector
The renewable energy sector has made significant progress in providing clean, reliable electricity to rural populations, improving livelihoods and economic opportunities worldwide. Solar energy is leading the clean energy transition, yet 685 million people still lack access to affordable electricity.
To achieve universal access by 2030, inclusive policies and investments must prioritise socio-economic benefits and gender equality. Women play a crucial role in community development, reinvesting more in essential services and local enterprises. Despite the energy sector being traditionally male-dominated, the renewable energy industry has a higher female participation rate. Advancing gender equality in renewable energy creates economic benefits, stimulates local demand, and enhances sector profitability.
To maximise impact, renewable energy companies and investors should implement strategies that empower women, ensuring equal opportunities and driving sustainable development.
